Key points about VSOM
VSOM works with cultured cells.
Cells are plated out on coverslips, allowing the use of oil immersion optics.
Imaging software in VSOM demarcates individual cells, or organelles within cells.
The location of each cell is measured and stored, effectively tagging each cell.
VSOM regards each cultured cell as an individual.
Individual cells can thus be tracked through many stages (unlike flow cytometry).
Small cell populations can be assayed with minimal reagent use (unlike multiwell)
Feedback from cell signals is used to adjust reagent flows (unlike anything previous)

Applications of VSOM include the following
- Rapid, economical testing and evaluation of new assay reagents
- Rapid calibration and optimization of reagents for large multiwell studies
- Rapid identification of variants in cell lines
- Ex-vivo toxicity testing (with clinical promise)
- Directing stem cell cultures to mature into specific cell types
- Knowledge-based control of growing conditions
- Associate morphological changes with dye signals
    - rely on morphological signal, and eliminate dye from future protocols
- Design growth environments conducive to propagation of selected cell types

VSOM enhances many present techniques, competes with some techniques, and does some things that can’t be done at all with present techniques.
